GG2822 is an immature Yellow-legged Gull that was tagged in Malta on 7 April 2026 following rehabilitation. The bird was found weak on the 24 March 2026 at Anchor Bay and was successfully rehabilitated and released in Salina. It initially moved between Malta and Sicily, travelling along Sicily’s western coast and spending time around Palermo. In the second half of May, it left Sicily and crossed the Mediterranean to Tunisia. From there, it followed the North African coast westwards, passing Tunis and continuing into Algeria. It reached Algiers around the beginning of June and subsequently travelled farther west along the Algerian coast, reaching the area near Mostaganem by 18 June, where it has remained up to the present.

Flight for Insight: Monitoring Yellow-legged Gulls

The Yellow-legged Gull is one of Malta's most familiar seabirds, yet surprisingly little is known about the species in particular its movements. Over the past years BirdLife Malta became increasingly concerned at the number of sick, weak gulls being recovered from different places in the Maltese Islands. Most of these birds are successfully rehabilitated thanks to the dedicated work of our conservation team. However a number of birds are recovered when it is too late and unfortunately do not make it. The idea of this project is to try and find out what the possible causes of this sickness is....
