GG2824 is a sub adult Yellow-legged Gull that was tagged in Malta on 17 April 2026 following a few weeks of rehabilitation having been found weak and stranded on St Paul's Islands on the 21 March 2026. During its first month after release, it commuted between Malta and south-eastern Sicily. In the second half of May, it travelled north through eastern Sicily, crossed the Strait of Messina to mainland Italy, and continued towards southern Puglia. It then followed Italy’s eastern coastline northwards to Gargano National Park and the surrounding area, which it continues to explore.

Flight for Insight: Monitoring Yellow-legged Gulls

The Yellow-legged Gull is one of Malta's most familiar seabirds, yet surprisingly little is known about the species in particular its movements. Over the past years BirdLife Malta became increasingly concerned at the number of sick, weak gulls being recovered from different places in the Maltese Islands. Most of these birds are successfully rehabilitated thanks to the dedicated work of our conservation team. However a number of birds are recovered when it is too late and unfortunately do not make it. The idea of this project is to try and find out what the possible causes of this sickness is....
