GG2821 is a Yellow-legged Gull that was tagged in Malta on 27 February 2026 following a brief and successful rehabilitation, with the bird found week a few weeks before (6 February 2026) on St. Paul's Island. It initially remained around Malta and made several trips between the Maltese Islands and south-eastern Sicily. In late May, it travelled north along Sicily’s eastern coast, crossing the Strait of Messina on 28 May to reach mainland Italy. It then continued to southern Puglia, where it has remained exploring the region since June.

Flight for Insight: Monitoring Yellow-legged Gulls

The Yellow-legged Gull is one of Malta's most familiar seabirds, yet surprisingly little is known about the species in particular its movements. Over the past years BirdLife Malta became increasingly concerned at the number of sick, weak gulls being recovered from different places in the Maltese Islands. Most of these birds are successfully rehabilitated thanks to the dedicated work of our conservation team. However a number of birds are recovered when it is too late and unfortunately do not make it. The idea of this project is to try and find out what the possible causes of this sickness is....
