GG2733 is a third calendar year Yellow-legged Gull that was tagged in Malta on 29 January 2026 following rehabilitation. During February and March, it explored the waters around Malta and the southern and western coasts of Sicily, spending time around Palermo. At the end of May, it began a rapid northward journey, crossing from Sicily to the Italian mainland around 1 June. It travelled north via Naples and Rome, continued through central and northern Italy, and reached the Milan area in early June, where it has remained up to the present.

Flight for Insight: Monitoring Yellow-legged Gulls

The Yellow-legged Gull is one of Malta's most familiar seabirds, yet surprisingly little is known about the species in particular its movements. Over the past years BirdLife Malta became increasingly concerned at the number of sick, weak gulls being recovered from different places in the Maltese Islands. Most of these birds are successfully rehabilitated thanks to the dedicated work of our conservation team. However a number of birds are recovered when it is too late and unfortunately do not make it. The idea of this project is to try and find out what the possible causes of this sickness is....
